I spent my entire year in 2004 traveling and working in the wine industry between Australia and New Zealand. Shortly after arriving, I had my first epiphany experience with The Great Aussie Reds. This style of blend, pairing the elegance and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness and round mid palate of Shiraz (Syrah) is a bit of an institution in Australia, a classic red! Much like that of the iconic Australian Akubra hat, the name we chose to give our wine which was inspired by those Southern Australian red wine beauties mate!
We took fruit from the north, Paso Robles, for our source of Cabernet Sauvignon to bring structure and body, with fruit from the south, Edna Valley, for the Syrah to provide suppleness, spice, and intensity. This new blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Syrah is elegant and forceful at once, full of smoky black and red fruit flavors, savory roasted meat, green peppercorn, and bay leaf notes. The wine is seamlessly balanced with dusty tannins wrapped in a medium bodied approachable frame with great acidity bringing length. The Akubra was aged for 22 months in 100% French Oak, 25% new barrels.
The only thing missing now is some friends, food, a little EVOO and a BBQ.
